BG loses to Mississippi State 21-20

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Bowling Green State University football team saw its bid for an upset of a Southeastern Conference school fall one point short in a 21-20 loss to Mississippi State tonight.

The Falcons fall to 5-2 overall, while Mississippi State now is 3-3.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter, as BG averted trouble on the Bulldogs first drive of the fourth quarter when Devon Bell's 44-yard field goal attempt bounced off the right upright.

But the Falcons' two fourth-quarter drives stalled, once on MSU's 40 and the other on BG's 45.

THIRD QUARTER

The Bowling Green State University football team trails Mississippi State 21-20 after three quarters at Davis Wade Stadium tonight.

The Falcons trailed 21-13 at halftime but had two third-period drives. The first ended on a missed 45-yard field goal attempt by Tyler Tate, but on the second BG drove 76 yards on seven plays.

Matt Johnson scored on a two-yard run with 3:57 left in the quarter.

As the fourth period begins the Bulldogs have the ball on BG's 25.

HALFTIME

Trailing 14-3 after one period, the Falcons drove 96 yards on six plays following a pass interference penalty on the Bulldogs. Andre Givens capped the drive with a seven-yard TD run with 4:15 to play in the half.

But Mississippi State responded with a 10-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a 10-yard scoring run by Dak Prescott with 1:04 left.

Bowling Green responded with a six-play, 48-yard drive just before the half and got a 45-yard field goal by Tyler Tate.

FIRST QUARTER

The Bowling Green State University football team trails Mississippi State 14-3 after the first quarter at Davis Wade Stadium.

The Bulldogs scored on their first drive, with LaDarius Perkins capping the 75-yard march with a 1-yard TD dive.

BG's BooBoo Gates intercepted a pass on MSU's second possession and returned it to the Bulldogs 13, but the Falcons had to settle for a 35-yard field goal by Tyler Tate.

Mississippi State's next play from scrimmage resulted in a 75-yard touchdown run by Dak Prescott.
