The University of Toledo women’s basketball program announced a six-member recruiting class Thursday.

The signees are 5-foot-10 guard Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott (London, England), 5-7 guard Mikaela Boyd (Hillside, Ill.), 6-2 forward Lindsay Dorr (Rogers, Minn.), 6-3 forward/center Nancy Kessler (St. Catherines, Ontario), 6-1 forward Michaela Rassmussen (Victoria, Minn.), and 6-1 wing Jada Woody (Canton, Mich.).

“We’re so excited about the talent and the depth for this class,” coach Tricia Cullop said in a statement. “All six are capable of challenging for minutes right away. They each give us the needed depth we’re going without this season. I feel like we have addressed a lot of the needs that we so desperately need with the graduation of key players this coming year. I could not be more thrilled with this group, as they are six unbelievable people.”

Bravo-Harriott’s commitment came in recent days. She played this past summer with Toledo freshman Janice Monakana on England’s U-20 national team but tore her hamstring and was unable to compete. Bravo-Harriott represented England at the 2012 FIBA U-18 Championships (Division A) and averaged 10.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.1 steals, and 2.0 assists in 24.7 minutes per game.

With the additions of Bravo-Harriott and Kessler, UT is expected to have five non-Americans on next season’s roster.

Hunting

The firearm season for deer opens today in Michigan and runs for the next two weeks.

Hunters are encouraged by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to have their deer checked at a local DNR office or check station so that biologists can record the harvest location and date, gender, and antler measurements. Additional tissue might be collected on a voluntary basis for the bovine tuberculosis surveillance study taking place in select counties.

Information on check station hours and locations is available at the www.michigan.gov/deercheck Web site.

Volleyball

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — The Bedford girls volleyball team captured the Class A regional championship by defeating Allen Park 25-11, 25-13, 24-26, 25-18.

The Mules advanced to the state quarterfinal round, where they will face Livonia Stevenson at Gibraltar Carlson High School on Tuesday.

Basketball

NEW YORK — James Harden scored 36 points in his return to the lineup, and the Houston Rockets withstood Carmelo Anthony’s 45 points to beat the New York Knicks 109-106 Thursday night, giving Jeremy Lin another winning night at Madison Square Garden.

Anthony had the highest-scoring game in the NBA this season and grabbed 10 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for the Knicks in their fourth straight home loss.

Chandler Parsons added 22 points and Lin had 21 for the Rockets, who beat the Knicks for the eighth straight time.
