    ANN ARBOR -- Tyler Bozak's goal in a shootout lifted the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings in the Winter Classic this afternoon at Michigan Stadium.

    Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard (24 saves) stopped James van Riemsdyk in the shootout, but gave up a goal to Joffrey Lupul before Bozak scored the game-winner.

    Toronto goalie Jonathan Bernier (41 saves) stopped Daniel Alfredsson and Tomas Tatar; Pavel Datsyuk scored in the shootout for the Red Wings.

    THIRD PERIOD

    Justin Abdelkader scored with 5:32 left in the third period to send the Detroit Red Wings to overtime against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

    Tyler Bozak's goal gave the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead less than five minutes into the third.

    Today's announced attendance of 105,491 is believed to be a record for attendance at a hockey game, besting the previous record of 104,173 set in December of 2010, when Michigan Stadium hosted The Big Chill. Guinness World Records needs to verify the mark to make it an official record.

     

    SECOND PERIOD

    James van Riemsdyk's goal with 36.5 seconds left in the second period tied the Winter Classic at 1-1 after the second period today.

    Van Riemsdyk's goal answered Daniel Alfredsson's goal; Alfredsson redirected Henrik Zetterberg's pass on a 2-on-1 play past Toronto goalie Jonathan Bernier (26 saves) with less than seven minutes left in the second.

    Van Riemsdyk settled a puck at his feet to the left of Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard (17 saves) to tie the game for the Maple Leafs.

     

    FIRST PERIOD

    Toronto goalie Jonathan Bernier made 13 saves in the first period as the Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings enter the second period in a scoreless tie.

    Jimmy Howard has made five saves for the Red Wings.

    More than 105,000 filled Michigan Stadium for the NHL's annual New Year's Day outdoor hockey game, and NHL officials expected it to set a Guinness World Record for attendance at a hockey game today in Ann Arbor.

    Per the National Weather Service, the high temperature in Ann Arbor was 12 degrees at faceoff, with Washtenaw County under a winter weather advisory.
