DETROIT -- Patrick Eaves' shootout goal helped lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 shootout win over the Washington Capitals tonight at Joe Louis Arena.

Eaves was the 13th shooter in the extra session; after Eaves scored, Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard stopped Washington's Jay Beagle to secure the win.

Jason Chimera’s power-play goal gave Washington a 1-0 lead; he redirected Nicklas Backstrom’s shot from the right circle past Howard at 15:24 of the first.

Drew Miller tied the game at 1-1 2:09 into the second, and Danny DeKeyser gave the Red Wings their first goal with 1:39 left in the first on slapshot from the point.

Washington's Casey Wellman tied the game at 2-2 eight minutes into the third, and Gustav Nyquist gave the Red Wings a 3-2 lead two minutes later.

The Red Wings killed off a slashing penalty against Tomas Jurco in the game's final four minutes to preserve a one-goal lead, but Alex Ovechkin's goal with seven seconds left in the third forced overtime.

The home-and-home series between the two teams continues at 12:30 p.m. Sunday in Washington
