Markey wins Ohio outdoor writer awards

Blade Outdoors Editor Matt Markey received five awards, including three first-place honors, at the Outdoor Writers of Ohio 75th annual conference in Athens.

In the category of Best Newspaper Outdoors Column, Markey won first place for a compilation of his work, including the Outdoors Page, which is a collaborative effort with Blade artist Jeff Basting.

Markey won first place in Environmental Writing for his piece on the tragic loss of millions of trees to the emerald ash borer.

He won first in the Outdoors/​Travel category for a story on visiting the stand of old growth forest on Michigan's rugged Keweenaw Peninsula.

Markey won second place in Environmental Writing for a story on Lake Erie's continuing struggle with massive algae blooms. He won a third place in the Best Outdoors Column competition for a collection of columns.
