UT coach Broce misses PGA cut

LOUISVILLE — Jamie Broce said he was “a little bummed” he failed to beat all of the 19 other club professionals in the PGA Championship field Friday. But he did finish two shots better than Tiger Woods.

“I’m 1 for 1 beating him in majors,” Broce, the University of Toledo men’s golf coach, said with a laugh.

No club pro survived the 36-hole cut, but only two finished ahead of Broce, who carded rounds of 74-72—146, a 4-over-par total. The cut came at 1-over and sent 74 eligible players into weekend play at Valhalla Golf Club.

Broce was poised to be among them — after three birdies in a four-hole stretch, he was one shot off the cut line. He started his round on the back nine, and his birdie binge covered holes 18, 2, and 3.

“The second hole is maybe the hardest hole on the planet,” Broce said. “I made a 15-footer from behind the cup there, and I figured if I could steal one at the toughest hole, maybe I could get a few more.”

He got one more at the next hole, a par-3, but the momentum stalled as he played his last six holes in 2-over. “It was fantastic,” Broce said of his first major-championship experience.
