ANN ARBOR — Jim McElwain is due $300,000 from the University of Michigan, according to the recently-hired wide receivers coach’s contract.

But he could soon be seeing a pay increase.

The former Florida coach was named Michigan’s wide receivers coach last week. Since then, offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Tim Drevno resigned and offensive analyst Ed Warinner was elevated to offensive line coach.

Got all that? OK, good.

Where does McElwain fit in? Well, his one-year contract stipulates that “if at any point during the terms of this contract your title changes to ‘coordinator,’ your base salary will be reassessed.” A similar clause was written into the contact of Dan Enos, who was UM’s wide receivers coach for less than a month before he left for a job at Alabama.

McElwain, not passing game coordinator Pep Hamilton, is the most likely candidate to take over the Wolverines’ offensive coordinator duties. He was previously the coordinator at Alabama, where he helped lead the Crimson Tide to two national championships.

McElwain was fired by Florida in the middle of the 2017 season. He will receive a $7.5 million buyout through 2021.
