Rookie goalie Angus Redmond leads Walleye to 2-1 road win

BRAMPTON, Ont. — Toledo Walleye goaltender Angus Redmond was stellar in his debut with the team Sunday, as the rookie led the way in a 2-1 shootout win against Brampton.

Redmond stopped 38 of the 39 shots he faced, including 28 of 29 in the first two periods. Mike Borkowski scored in the first period for Toledo. A.J. Jenks, who was the second skater in the shootout, then scored the game-winner.

Redmond, who was assigned to Toledo from San Diego of the American Hockey League on Feb. 22, stopped all three skaters he faced in the shootout.

Redmond, a native of Langley, B.C., started his pro career with the ECHL's Utah Grizzlies in October. He played in 18 games for Utah and posted a 2-8-2 record with a 4.07 goals-against average. Redmond played last season at Michigan Tech University in the Western Conference Hockey Association. He went 22-10-5 with a 1.85 GAA.

Toledo is 25-4-2 all-time against Brampton (22-26-10).

The Walleye (40-14-5) were playing on the road less than 16 hours after going to overtime in a 2-1 loss Saturday to South Carolina at the Huntington Center.

Toledo had just four shots in the first and eight in the second.

Brampton took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Jeff King just 5 minutes, 43 seconds into the game.

But Borkowski scored his 15th of the season, on assists from Zach Nastasiuk and Simon Denis, to tie it with two minutes left in the period on a perfectly-placed wrist shot.

The fatigued Walleye then picked up the pace in the third, firing 13 shots that were all stopped by Beast goaltender Chris Driedger.

Brampton outshot Toledo 3-1 in overtime.

In the first round of the shootout, Driedger stopped Borkowski and Redmond stoned King. Jenks then beat Driedger through his legs to open the second round. Redmond earned the win by then stopping Chris Leveille and Vincent Dunn.

By earning two points, the Walleye now lead the ECHL with 85 points, one more than idle Florida, who leads the Eastern Conference.

Toledo has a three-game homestand this coming weekend. The Walleye host Quad City at 7:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday before taking on Indy at 5:15 p.m. Sunday.
