  • The Mud Hens had a Hall of Fame visitor this weekend.

Former Detroit Tigers player and manager Alan Trammell, now the special assistant to the general manager for the Tigers, was at Fifth Third Field to work with the Hens as well as help with player evaluations.

Trammell was in the news in December of last year when he and former teammate Jack Morris were elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Modern Baseball Era committee. Trammell and Morris will be inducted along with Vladimir Guerrero, Trevor Hoffman, Chipper Jones, and Jim Thome in Cooperstown, N.Y., on Sunday, July 29.

The San Diego native spent 20 years as a player with the Tigers, earning MVP honors in the 1984 World Series by batting .450 with two home runs and six RBIs in five games. Trammell also finished second in the 1987 American League MVP balloting after hitting .343 with 28 home runs and 105 to lead the Tigers to the AL East Division title.

Trammell went on to serve as Detroit’s manager from 2003-05 and also spent time as a hitting coach and special instructor in the minor leagues.

Trammell spoke with Blade sports writer John Wagner over the weekend about his work with the Tigers and about his election to the Hall of Fame.
