Mud Hens' 6-game win streak snapped with loss at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre

    • MOOSIC, Pa. — The Toledo Mud Hens saw their six-game win streak snapped Sunday as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre claimed a 7-3 victory.

    The RailRiders scored four runs in their final three at-bats to hand Toledo just its third loss in nine road games this season. The Hens’ 11-4 record remains the best in the International League this year.

    Scranton/Wilkes-Barre jumped on top early with a first-inning run against Toledo starter Ryan Carpenter. Abiatal Avelino led off with a double, then stole third base before scoring on a groundout by Shane Robinson.

    The Hens took the lead in the fourth, when Christin Stewart drew a two-out walk against RailRiders starter Chance Adams, and Chad Huffman followed with his second home run of the season.

    But Scranton/Wilkes-Barre retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Carpenter surrendered singles to Erik Kratz, Zack Zehner, and Ryan McBroom to load the bases, then hit Billy Fleming with a pitch to force home the tying run.

    L.J. Mazzilli then hit into a double play, but Zehner scored to break the tie.

    The Mud Hens retied the game in the sixth as Mike Gerber drew a one-out walk, then was forced at second on a Dawel Lugo groundout. The RailRiders brought in left-handed reliever Oliver Perez to face the left-handed hitting Stewart, who doubled home Lugo.

    But Scranton/Wilkes-Barre took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth, when Fleming singled with two outs, then scored from first on a double by Mazzilli.

    Kyle Higashioka homered to lead off the seventh, and the RailRiders added two more insurance runs in the eighth against reliever Victor Alcantara when Fleming singled with two outs and Mazzilli followed with his first home run of the season.

    The Mud Hens will begin a four-game series in Pawtucket with a doubleheader at 4:35 p.m. Monday at McCoy Stadium.
