UT has welcomed big-name foes to Glass Bowl

Five-time national champion Miami (Fla.) is one of the biggest names in college football to ever come to the Glass Bowl, but the Hurricanes are far from the only notable team to make the trip.

Since 1996, the Rockets have hosted 12 games against current Power Five schools, posting a 7-5 record. Toledo has also welcomed such notable names as Boise State, Cincinnati, Navy, and Fresno State in that span.

What follows is a look at some of the notable non-conference games UT has hosted over the past 23 seasons.

Sept. 19, 2015: Toledo 30, Iowa State 23, 2OT

Toledo outlasted Iowa State in two overtimes to secure the Rockets their second win over a Power Five opponent that season. 

The Rockets opened the year by defeating Arkansas 16-12 in Little Rock. It marked the first season in school history that Toledo notched two wins over power-conference opponents.

Kareem Hunt carried the ball 24 times for 129 rushing yards, while Damion Jones-Moore scored the winning touchdown in overtime.

Sept. 6, 2014: Missouri 49, Toledo 24

Kenton native Maty Mauk was 21-of-32 passing for 325 yards and five touchdowns for No. 25 Missouri, which was led by former Toledo coach Gary Pinkel.

Kareem Hunt rushed 15 times for 148 yards and three touchdowns for Toledo.

Oct. 19, 2013: Toledo 45, Navy 44, 2OT

David Fluellen and freshman Kareem Hunt dominated on the ground and Toledo edged Navy in a double-overtime thriller.

Fluellen rushed 20 times for 160 yards and a touchdown. Hunt, filling in when Fluellen went down with an injury, carried the ball 15 times for 127 yards and two scores. Terrance Owens’ touchdown pass to Bernard Reedy, combined with Navy’s missed extra point, was the difference in OT.

Oct. 20, 2012: Toledo 29, Cincinnati 23

Bernard Reedy had a key 91-yard kickoff return touchdown as the Rockets topped 21st-ranked Cincinnati.

David Fluellen rushed for 161 yards on 25 carries for Toledo, while Jeremiah Detmer kicked five field goals in the win.

Sept. 16, 2011: Boise State 40, Toledo 15

The No. 4 Broncos steamrolled Toledo as Kellen Moore passed for 455 yards and five touchdowns.

Boise State running back Doug Martin ran for 122 yards and a score as well.

Sept. 3, 2010: Arizona 41, Toledo 2

Wildcats quarterback Nick Foles ruined Toledo’s home opener, passing for 360 yards and two touchdowns in the Arizona rout.

Foles completed 32-of-37 passes and added a rushing TD.

Sept. 11, 2009: Toledo 54, Colorado 38

Toledo quarterback Aaron Opelt racked up 319 passing yards and four touchdowns in the Rockets’ win.

Eric Page had 138 receiving yards and a score. Toledo opened a 30-3 lead and never looked back.

Sept. 20, 2008: Fresno State 55, Toledo 54, 2OT

Toledo lost a heartbreaker to the 25th-ranked Bulldogs on a failed two-point conversion in the second overtime.

Fresno State quarterback Tom Brandstater threw for 231 yards and four touchdowns, while UT quarterback Aaron Opelt passed for 265 yards and three TDs. Toledo backs DaJuane Collins and Morgan Williams combined for 270 rushing yards.

Sept. 22, 2007: Toledo 36, Iowa State 35

Toeldo’s Greg Hay recovered a botched punt in the end zone late with 3:22 to go, giving the Rockets the game-winning touchdown.

Jalen Parmele returned a kickoff for a touchdown and ran for a score, while Aaron Opelt threw and ran for a TD.

Sept. 1, 2007: Purdue 52, Toledo 24

Curtis Painter shredded the UT defense for four touchdowns as the Joe Tiller-coached Boilermakers rolled to victory.

Jalen Parmele rushed for 93 yards and a score for Toledo.

Sept. 15, 2006: Toledo 37, Kansas 31, 2OT

Bo Martin intercepted Kansas quarterback Kerry Meier’s pass on the first possession of the second overtime and Jalen Parmele followed with a 25-yard TD rush as the Rockets edged the Jayhawks.

Parmele ran for two touchdowns and Barry Church had an 84-yard interception return for a score.

Sept. 20, 2003: Toledo 35, Pittsburgh 31

Bruce Gradkowski found Lance Moore on a 9-yard TD strike with 55 seconds left to score Toledo the upset over Larry Fitzgerald and the No. 9 Panthers.

Gradkowski had 461 passing yards and three touchdowns in the game.

Oct. 27, 2001: Toledo 21, Navy 20

Chester Taylor rushed for 195 yards and two touchdowns. Tavares Bolden was 21-of-29 passing with a 13-yard TD pass to Andrew Clarke.

The game was played in front of a Mid-American Conference record crowd of 36,852.

Aug. 30, 2001: Toledo 38, Minnesota 7

Toledo running back Chester Taylor accounted for four touchdowns, scoring on runs of 1, 64, and 41 yards and hauling in a 9-yard TD pass from quarterback Tavares Bolden.

Taylor finished with 186 yards rushing, and Toledo scored each of the first four times it had the ball.

Sept. 2, 1999: Syracuse 35, Toledo 12

Dee Brown rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns as Syracuse cruised by Toledo.

Toledo was bit by the injury bug as defensive end DeJuan Goulde suffered an asthma attack and had to be rushed to a hospital, while Rockets running back Chester Taylor sprained his ankle and receiver Manny Johnson broke his collarbone.

Sept. 6, 1997: Toledo 36, Purdue 22

Chris Wallace threw for 254 yards and two touchdowns as Toledo stunned Purdue and first-year head coach Joe Tiller, a Toledo native.

Dwayne Harris carried 32 times for 162 rushing yards and a score for Toledo, which built a 27-7 first-half lead.

Sept. 7, 1996: Indiana 40, Toledo 6

With Toledo coming off an 11-0-1 season, the first-ever visit by a Big Ten team to a MAC campus was supposed to be a coming-out party for the Rockets and record-setting tailback Wasean Tait. But Tait suffered a devastating knee injury in the first half and Toledo never got going on offense.

Jason Spear scored three rushing touchdowns to lead Indiana.
