BOWLING GREEN - Former Ohio State assistant men's basketball coach LaMonta Stone has been named to a similar position at Bowling Green, the school announced yesterday.

Stone spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach for the Buckeyes after spending the previous two years as an assistant at Eastern Michigan.

The 38-year-old Stone, a native of Detroit, also spent six seasons as boys basketball coach at River Rouge, Mich., where he posted a 126-24 record and claimed Class B state titles in 1998 and 1999.

"LaMonta is a quality individual who brings a number of key elements to our program," said Bowling Green coach Dan Dakich. "He has recruited successfully and tirelessly in this part of the country for both a Big Ten and a MAC school. And as a former successful head coach on the high school level, he brings knowledge and experience to our staff that is extremely valuable."

Stone will fill one of the two vacancies on the Bowling Green staff. Shaun Vandiver left after two seasons with the Falcons to become the top assistant at Northern Colorado, and Andy Markowski left the program after three seasons to accept a pharmaceutical sales position in his native Nebraska.

"Shaun is one of the most recognizable figures in the history of college basketball in Colorado and gets to help build a brand-new Division I program," Dakich said. "Andy has an opportunity to triple his salary, spend time with his young family and be closer to a place where his support system is much greater.

"They are both great guys and we wish nothing but the best for them."
