Toledo's Candle earns incentive-based bonuses

University of Toledo football coach Jason Candle and the Rockets are coming off one of the most successful seasons in recent program history.

Toledo won the Mid-American Conference West Division title outright for the first time since 1998, won the MAC title game for the first time since 2004, and has a chance to win 12 games for just the third time in program history.

All that success led to MAC coach of the year honors for Candle.

This stellar season will also mean extra cash for Candle as his contract calls for a set of performance-based incentive bonuses, most of which were achieved by Candle and the Rockets this season.

As a base salary this season, Candle made $675,000 ($425,000 salary plus $250,000 in annual marketing compensation). He also received a total of $125,000 in cumulative bonuses.

His bonuses include $30,000 for reaching 11 wins, $30,000 for winning the MAC championship game, $25,000 for winning a MAC West title, $20,000 for making a bowl game, and $20,000 for earning MAC coach of the year honors.

If Toledo wins the Dollar General Bowl against Appalachian State on Dec. 23 in Mobile, Ala., Candle will receive an additional bonus of $10,000.
