The imaginative Dewey Blocksma will give a public talk and teach at the University of Toledo next week, beginning with a found-object workshop for 60 students and faculty.

The sculptures they create will be displayed beginning with a public reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 17 and continuing through Jan. 25 in UT’s Center for Visual Arts adjacent to the Toledo Museum of Art.

Blocksma, who lives in Benzie County, Michigan, and was an emergency room physician for 10 years before turning full-time to art, will give a free, public talk at noon Jan. 15 on UT’s main campus in Carlson Library’s fifth floor Canaday Center. Blocksma has asked UT staff to gather all kinds of supplies for the workshop, ranging from pipe cleaners to tinker toys, said Barbara Miner, who’s coordinating the event.

The museum has more than 100 docents who lead tours.
