New Jeep Cherokee is officially on way to dealerships

After multiple delays, Chrysler has started shipping its new Jeep Cherokee to its dealerships.

The automaker has been building the long-awaited 2014 models since June, but the vehicles were kept in containment while Chrysler engineers tried to iron out calibration issues with the vehicle's all new nine-speed automatic transmission.

A Chrysler spokesman said this morning that shipments would begin today. She didn't know when the first vehicles would arrive in dealerships.

The Cherokee, Jeep's replacement for the Liberty, is built in Toledo at the company's Toledo Assembly Complex.

The vehicles were originally expected in dealerships as early as late August, but the date continued to get pushed back. Chrysler repeatedly said it would not release the vehicle to the public until it had everything absolutely right.

Pricing on the vehicle starts at just a shade less than $24,000, including destination charges.
