Report finds Toledo is 66th-ranked nationally for safest cities to drive in

Despite horrific weather at times, Toledo commuters — here on I-475 West — have lower costs than in most cities, a report says.

Toledo is the 66th-safest U.S. city to drive in, according to a report from the Allstate insurance company.

Allstate Corp. ranked the 200 biggest cities in the United States using data about property damage collisions involving drivers insured by the company. Other factors included population density and the amount of rain and snow a city gets annually.

Toledo ranked 78th last year.

The safest cities for drivers are Fort Collins, Colo., Brownsville, Texas, and Boise, Idaho.

The three worst are Worcester, Mass., Boston, and Washington.

Dayton (49th) is the only Ohio city deemed safer than Toledo. Cincinnati (170th) is the least safe in the state.

The data showed that Toledo drivers averaged 9.7 years between accidents, in a category that ranged from 4.3 years in Worcester to 14.2 years in Fort Collins and Brownsville.

Allstate said Toledo drivers are 3.3 percent more likely be in an accident than the average driver nationally. Drivers in Worcester are 135 percent more likely to be in an accident than the national average.

Allstate said the report is produced “to boost the country’s discussion about safe driving” and is not used to determine auto insurance rates.
