Delta state wrestling champs at duals, individual meets

    Delta wrestlers celebrate with winning the Division III team title at the state individual meet in Columbus. The Panthers also won a second straight state team duals title.

    • Delta posted an impressive double during the wrestling season.

    After repeating as the Division III team dual champions, the Panthers returned to Columbus about a month later and won the team championship at the D-III individual state tournament.

    With a school-record 12 state qualifiers, Delta put together a classic team effort to top the team results with 141 points.

    Kyle Keller, a 120-pound senior, delivered the team’s best effort, finishing as a state runner-up.

    Drew Mattin (106, freshman), Jake Spiess (113, sophomore), Noah Mattin (126, freshman), Dustin Marteney (132, sophomore), Jesse Beverly (145, freshman), Ryan Patchin (182, junior), Mark Francis (195, junior), Devon Richards (220, sophomore), and Chance Veller (285, sophomore) — all state qualifiers — will return next season.

    Spiess, who won the 106 title a year ago, finished third after losing to Woodmore’s Evan Ulinski in a state semifinal. Ulinski finished as runner-up, as did Fremont St. Joseph’s Corey Durbin at 285.

    Mattin, Beverly, and Tyler Fahrer placed third for Delta. Archbold’s Travis Jaramillo (220) claimed a third-place spot.

    Perrysburg also experienced a season to remember as the D-I state runner-up, the best finish in school history. Rocco Caywood (182), a senior, earned a state championship.

    Mario Guillen (113), a sophomore, J.P. Newton (152), a senior, and Kadin Llewellyn (195), a senior, claimed third-place finishes for the Yellow Jackets.

    Clay junior Richie Screptock won the D-I title at 132 to become the first Eagle to win a state championship while also leading the team to a fourth-place effort. Seniors Gavin Nelson (138) and Nick Stencel (160) each placed third.

    Central Catholic delivered a strong showing by finishing third in the D-II team standings.

    Irish senior Alex Mossing (152) and junior Nate Hagan (132) claimed state championships, while junior Josh Mossing (138) finished runner-up. Sophomore Josh Venia (106) placed third.

    In Division III, Genoa junior Jay Nino won a state title at 220. His final victory improved his season record to 65-2 to establish an Ohio record for most wins in a season.

    In Michigan, Bedford senior Adam Ortman (285) finished third and sophomore Blake Montrie (152) took sixth place at the state meet.
