Toledo rallies to defeat BG 28-25

I-75 Rivalry at Doyt Perry Stadium hard fought; UT scores game-winner on fourth-and-9

    BOWLING GREEN — Toledo scored the winning touchdown on fourth-and-9 with 1:22 to go and beat Bowling Green 28-25.

    Terrance Owens found Alonzo Russell in the end zone from 11 yards to give UT its first touchdown since the first half. On the previous play, third-and-26, Owens ran for 17 yards.

    BG advanced to its 32 where Matt Johnson threw incomplete on fourth down looking for Heath Jackson.

    UT has now beaten BG in four straight years.

    UT scored the first 21 points of the game before BG ripped off the next 25.

     

    THIRD QUARTER

    Bowling Green tacked on a field goal in the third quarter and now trails Toledo 21-10. The Falcons scored early in the 4th, adding a two point conversion as well, to make it 21-18.

    The Falcons advanced to the half-yard line and were poised to go for it on fourth-and-goal before lineman Dominic Flewellyn jumped early and moved the offense back five yards. Tyler Tate then kicked a 23-yard field goal.

    That scoring drive began after linebacker Gabe Martin stripped UT quarterback Terrance Owens inside UT's 30.

    BG advanced to UT's 25 to end the quarter.

     

    HALFTIME

    Toledo scored 21-unanswered points and leads Bowling Green 21-7 at halftime.

    The Rockets, 4-point underdogs in the Battle of I-75, scored touchdowns on all three of its first-half drives.

    Quarterback Terrance Owens recorded his first two-touchdown effort of the season, connecting with Alonzo Russell (five yards) for a 14-0 lead and Bernard (nine yards) for a 21-0 lead.

    Standout running back David Fluellen, whose availability was in question because of a back injury, has not played since the opening series. He has an injured ankle and his return is questionable. In his place, Kareem Hunt has 75 yards and a TD on 11 carries.

    Owens is 10 of 13 for 58 yards.

    BG got on the board with 24 seconds to go when tight end Alex Bayer pushed quarterback Matt Johnson across the goal line from one yard away.

    Toledo as the edge in total yards, 212 to 156.

    FIRST QUARTER

    Toledo led Bowling Green 7-0 after one quarter.The Rockets scored on their first series ending in a 1-yard run by Kareem Hunt. David Fluellen had three carries on the drive for 61 yards and appeared to suffer an ankle injury. He has not played since.

    Toledo ended the quarter at BG's 37 and face 1st and 10.

    BG's opening drive began promisingly but ended at UT's 23 when Ryan Burbrink dropped a fourth down pass.
