Grumbling for new coach ignores Clawson's rebuilding job

  • Bowling Green lost to its archrival from Toledo, and people were talking. The FBS teams the Falcons had beaten at that point had a .322 winning percentage, and BG hadn't beaten a team with a winning record all season.

No matter: The talk at the end of the 2002 season focused on Urban Meyer leaving for greener pastures.

Contrast that to this season, where the Falcons just lost to the Rockets, and BG's five wins are over teams with a combined 10-29 record (and .256 winning percentage). BG's lone win against a team with a winning record is over FCS member Murray State.

Believe it or not, there are grumbles that BG needs a new coach.

Look, I get that BG fans are unhappy with four straight losses to UT. But the grumbling ignores the rebuilding job Dave Clawson has done. Fact: If you look around the MAC, winning teams build their records mostly against losing clubs. For example, Buffalo's six wins have come against teams that are 8-40 this season (.167), and that has done nothing to kill the buzz surrounding the Bulls.

Rest assured there will be more talk about Clawson at season's end. But that talk will focus on whether he leaves for greener pastures as Meyer did roughly a decade ago.
