The son of a former Ohio State football player has verbally committed to join the Bowling Green State University men’s basketball team starting with the 2014-15 season.

Bernard “B.J.” Edwards, the son of former Buckeye wide receiver Bernard Edwards, said he will sign with the Falcons during the early signing period.

B.J. Edwards is a 6-0 guard from Lehigh High School in Lehigh Acres, Fla. Last season he averaged 18 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Lightning.

“On my visit, I was impressed with how the players took me in,” Edwards said. “The coaching staff was amazing.

“Everyone there treated me like family, and they really connected with me. Going far away to school, I’m going to need that.”

Per NCAA rules, Bowling Green coach Louis Orr cannot comment on potential recruits until they sign an official letter of intent. The “early” signing period begins Nov. 13, and Edwards is expected to sign then.

Lehigh coach Dawn McNew spoke glowingly about her top player.

“First of all, he’s a great kid — I feel blessed to coach him,” she said. “He’s very athletic, and he’s devoted to basketball. He’s a ‘gym rat,’ and he has really improved his game steadily.

“He’s a coach on the floor. And he’s really an asset to our team because of his ability to handle the basketball, his speed, and his athletic ability.”

Edwards’ father played at Ohio State from 1988-91 and caught 60 passes for 860 yards and four touchdowns in his career. As a senior he caught 27 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns.

BG’s Martin out for remainder of season

The BGSU football team has lost junior rover Gabe Martin for the season because of a right ACL tear.

Martin, a All-Mid-American Conference player last season, suffered the injury in Saturday's loss to Toledo. Martin had 36 tackles in seven games this season.

The Falcons also will be without wide receiver Jared Cohen for the next month after Cohen suffered a high ankle sprain in the loss to the Rockets. In eight games Cohen caught 10 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown.

BG plays at 8 p.m. Nov. 5 at 8 p.m. at Miami. The game will be on ESPNU.
