Falcons open season by dumping Michigan

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team got the season started on a successful note, downing the University of Michigan by a 63-52 count on Friday during the Iona Tip-Off Tournament.

The Falcons will face the host Gaels today at 3:30 p.m.

Senior Jillian Halfhill led the way for the Falcons, with game-high totals of 18 points and five assists. Halfhill went 4-of-8 from three-point range as the Falcons hit nine total shots from beyond the arc.

In her first game as Falcon, redshirt sophomore Erica Donovan scored 15 points.

Bowling Green built a 7-0 lead two minutes, 10 seconds into the contest and expanded the lead to 13 with 14:23 left in the first half — their largest lead of the game.

Sophomore Miriam Justinger had six points, as did junior Jasmine Matthews.

Matthews, who was limited to just 13 games last season, played 13 minutes and hit a pair of three-pointers.

Freshman Rachel Konieczki scored four points in the first game of her collegiate career.

IONA 82, ARIZONA 75

Iona’s Damika Martinez hit a 3-pointer with seven seconds left in regulation to tie the game and the Gaels rolled in the extra session.

Martinez and Joy Adams led Iona, who scored 35 and 22 points, respectively.

Junior Candice Warthen led Arizona with 22 points, four assists, and three steals.

Iona led, 35-30 at halftime, but the Wildcats came out and executed a 15-0 run in the second half in a scoring flurry led by six different players.

The Gaels went on a run of their own and managed to get within three with 14.4 seconds remaining.
