Pennsylvania high school upset with BGSU

BOWLING GREEN — Cathedral Prep School is one of the top high school football programs in Pennsylvania. The Erie, Pa., school won the PIAA Class AAA title in 2012, and last year it lost in the state semifinals.

A problem with a Cathedral Prep football standout, who said he verbally committed to the Falcons but does not have a scholarship offer, has upset Cathedral Prep coach Mike Mischler.

“Basically, Bowling Green is telling this kid they don’t have a spot for him,” Mischler said. “That makes me very angry.

“I’m not ever letting them or their coaches in this school again while I’m coach here.”

The player is Marlon Tyree, a Class AAA all-state safety who committed to Bowling Green in July, according to a story in the Erie Times-News. On Tuesday, Tyree was named to the Pennsylvania roster for the Big 33 Football Classic, a summer all-star game of top football players from that state and Maryland.

Mischler said Mark Carney, the wide receivers coach under former coach Dave Clawson, was the coach who recruited Tyree.

Clawson left days after the Falcons won the Mid-American Conference championship game, and Dino Babers was named his replacement a little more than a week later.

Carney did not follow Clawson to Wake Forest and was not retained on the Falcons’ staff by Babers.

Mischler said he and Tyree tried to contact the new staff, but Mischler said he didn’t hear from BG until recently.

Mischler said the Bowling Green coaching staff told him the Falcons do not consider Tyree one of their commitments.

With national signing day for college football one week away, Mischler said Tyree is without a Football Bowl Subdivision scholarship offer.

“I’m not a first-year coach. I know the zigs and zags of recruiting,” Mischler said. “I work to help kids get scholarships, but I also try to protect kids from a process that can chew them up.

“We waited to hear from them, but they didn’t get back to me. That’s the problem I have with them. I think someone has to be held accountable for that.”

NCAA rules prohibit Bowling Green coaches from talking about potential signees, even those who will not attend the school, until national signing day next Wednesday.

Another one-time Bowling Green recruit, tight end Brock Hinkel of Iowa Western Community College, said via text message that he would not sign with the Falcons.

Hinkel did not respond to a message seeking further comment.
