BGSU falls to Middle Tennessee 42-21

BOWLING GREEN — The Bowling Green State University football team suffered a 42-21 loss to Middle Tennessee University at a rain-drenched Doyt Perry Stadium Saturday.

The Falcons fell to 1-2 overall with the loss, while MTSU now is 2-1.

The Blue Raiders, who led 35-21 entering the final quarter, took advantage of a interception of BG quarterback James Knapke to score the game’s final touchdown.

I’Tavius Mathers scored on a four-yard TD run with 4:01 left in regulation for his fourth touchdown of the game.

THIRD QUARTER

The Bowling Green State University football team trails Middle Tennessee 35-21 after three quarters at a rain-drenched Doyt Perry Stadium today.

Middle Tennessee, which held a 28-21 halftime lead, scored on the first play of the third period when Brett Stockstill threw a swing pass to I’Tavius Mathews, who took the pass and ran 78 yards for a touchdown.

The rest of the period was played in hard rain that limited passing.

HALFTIME

With the game tied 14-14 after the first quarter, BG’s Alfonso Mack intercepted a pass and returned it 47 yards to the Middle Tennessee 1, where Donovan Wilson punched it into the end zone with 13:14 to play in the quarter.

Late in the quarter the Blue Raiders drove 80 yards on nine plays, with Brett Stockstill throwing a 16-yard TD toss to Richie James with 1:42 before halftime.

On the ensuing drive BG’s James Knapke fumbled the ball and MTSU recovered on the Falcons 46, and three plays later I’Tavius Mathers scored on a four-yard run with just 26 seconds on the clock.

FIRST QUARTER

The Bowling Green State University football team is tied with Middle Tennessee State 14-14 after the first quarter.

After BG’s Ronnie Moore fumbled a punt that the Blue Raiders recovered on the Falcons 9, Brett Stockstill threw a six-yard TD pass to Ty Lee at 10:50 of the quarter.

After a three-and-out it was Middle Tennessee that fumbled a punt that Bowling Green’s James Sanford recovered on the Blue Raiders 21. Josh Cleveland scored from a yard out to tie the score with 8:17 on the clock.

The Falcons took a lead with an 80-yard touchdown drive that was capped by a four-yard scoring run by Donovan Wilson at the 3:56 mark of the period.

But Middle Tennessee tied the game with 2:03 on the clock with a 53-yard scoring run by I’Tavius Mathers.
