Football and philanthropy for rivalry week

THE 24th annual Border Battle Bash, Northwest Ohio’s largest indoor tailgate, presented by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo, was at the Premier Banquet Hall.
It was the end of the club’s 125th anniversary year of celebrations and celebrate club members did. Scarlet and gray and maize and blue were everywhere, from the decor to the more than 500 supporters who donned their favorite team’s colors. It was all just in time for Saturday’s big rivalry game.
The upbeat event included games, raffles, auctions, and tailgate foods.
Emcee Dan Cummins of WTOL-TV, Channel 11, led the show, then his WTOL colleague Jerry Anderson led a lively auction. Prizes included a week at a Gulf Shores Alabama condo bought by Emily and Adam Reny. Darryl Lycourt bought a lottery ticket jersey. Sean Siwa was the highest bidder for tickets to the Big Game.
Casey and Kim Timiney’s team won this year’s Football Race to the End Zone. A race-car simulator loaned for the evening by Mel Harbaugh added to the fun, allowing guests to take a spin and try for best time making the laps.
More than $45,000 is the estimated amount raised. Bravo to event chairman Rob Shick and his team of volunteers. Top supporters included Meyer Hill Lynch, Columbia Gas of Northwest Ohio, Owens Corning, and The Andersons.
Next year’s Bash will be Nov. 16.

THE PARTY to celebrate the rivalry of Ohio State vs Michigan was once again at the Ottawa Hills home of John MacKay and Cindy Rerucha, with co-hosts Sue McClay and Gary Diesing. The gathering didn’t start till 8 p.m., so some revelers arrived right on time but didn’t stay long while others stayed till midnight or so. But the main focus was on tasty food and beverages while chatting with friends.
A FOOTBALL theme was chosen for the 23rd annual Danberry Treasure Chest auction and dinner held at the Hilton Garden Inn at Levis Commons in Perrysburg. The $134,000 raised benefits ProMedica Children’s Hospital for direct emergency funds to local families in need while a family member is experiencing a chronic or debilitating disease.
The funds will be added to the treasure chest through the ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital Foundation. Since the event started 22 years ago, it has raised more than $765,000 to assist 750 families in need. Kudos to event chairman Michelle Rumans who was assisted by Heather Warga.
MANY volunteers were honored during the Association of Fund-raising Professionals National Philanthropy Day luncheon. Among them were Robert Loeb, Jonette Moss, Debbie Packo, Ed Ruszkiewicz, Traci Schwann, John Trautman, and Nancy Wineland.
THE SHOPPING season officially starts on Black Friday in area stores. Other shopping opportunities include the Toledo Bar Association Auxiliary’s 11th Annual Holiday Trunk Show and Raffle from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 1 at Inverness Club. Admission is free.
