There are dozens of barriers standing in the way of students who want to pursue a college degree. Access shouldn’t be one of them. To help make classes more convenient, Owens Community College offers more than 200 online classes – which students can take right from the comfort of their couch.
eOwens, the collective name for Owens’ distance learning opportunities, allows students to pursue courses and degrees without going to campus on a regular basis.
“Many students tellus they take online classes because their work and family obligations make it difficult for them to attend classes during traditionally scheduled hours,” said e-Learning Division Director Mark Karamol. “Others say they just prefer the convenience.”
Convenience is the main reason Owens student Rachel Reinhart takes online classes, but there were some added benefits as well.
“I take online classes because with my busy, unpredictable schedule, it’s easier if I can work on my own time,” Reinhart said. “Taking online classes has taught me how to prioritize better and discipline myself to get work done. Overall, I feel I’ve become more responsible and organized by taking online classes.”
Owens’ 200-plus online courses can be applied to numerous on-campus degrees and can transfer to other colleges. In addition to these courses, Owens offers complete degree and certificate programs that can be completed online. These degree and certificate programs include Accounting, Business Management, Associate of Arts General Concentration and Web Design.
Owens also offers more than 20 hybrid programs, which are programs and certificates that have at least 50 percent of their course work offered online, but also include on-campus courses.
“Purely online programs help us to serve students who want what we have to offer, but either can’t fit traditional classes into their lifestyle or may not be located in our geographic area,” Karamol said. “Our hybrid programs appeal to local students because the flexibility of online learning is combined with the experience of campus life if they choose.”
While online students don’t have to go to campus on a regular basis, they are still encouraged to participate in clubs and athletics and attend college events if they want a typical college experience.
“The advent of new technologies like enhanced discussion boards, interactive media and even social networks provide a new kind of college experience for online students,” Karamol said.
In addition to supporting participation in college activities, Owens also supports students facing some of the unique challenges that come with taking online courses.
“One unique challenge that online students face is their increased need for technical support at all hours of the day,” Karamol said. “Owens has worked continuously over the years to assure that its services and resources are equally available to both traditional and online students; this includes 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week tech support.”
