Flooding strikes Northwest Ohio

As temperatures crept into the low 30s on Sunday, the traditional flooding problems began in several northwest Ohio communities.

The National Weather Service in Cleveland issued a flood advisory on Sunday for an ice jam and rain in eastern Sandusky County, central Seneca County, and Wyandot County.

Law enforcement indicated that some minor flooding was occurring along parts of the Sandusky River because of the ice jams. South River Road south of Fremont was closed between County Road 43 and Buckland Road. A road was also closed because of flooding in southern Wyandot County near County Roads 71 and 96 due to rain and melting snow.

The National Weather Service also issued a hazardous weather outlook notice on Sunday for several area communities, including Wauseon, Ottawa, Napoleon, Archbold, Defiance, Paulding, Antwerp, Pandora, Van Wert, Delphos and Lima, for possible flooding. The flood notice also includes northern Indiana and southwest Michigan.

No flooding problems were reported in these communities on Sunday.

“Currently we’re doing good right now,” a Wauseon police officer said Sunday afternoon.

The weather service is noting that melting snow and recent rainfall may cause minor river flooding through Sunday night.

Light snow is expected through Tuesday in sections of northwest Ohio which may cause slick road conditions.
