Toledo women fall short in comeback bid at Miami

The University of Toledo women’s basketball team lost its second straight game, falling 67-58 to Miami on Wednesday night at Millett Hall.

Mikaela Boyd led Toledo (15-9, 6-6 MAC) with 18 points, while Kaayla McIntyre added 12 points and 10 rebounds and Mariella Santucci finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Lauren Dickerson poured in 22 points to lead Miami (15-8, 7-5 MAC), Kendall McCoy added 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Kayla Brown chipped in with 10 points.

The Rockets trailed 13-10 after one quarter and 33-24 at halftime but worked their way back in the third quarter. Toledo tied the game 40-40 with 3:56 left in the third after a Boyd steal and layup. McIntyre made one of two free throws to give UT a 41-40 lead. Kristen Levering answered with two free throws for Miami, before a Santucci layup gave the Rockets a 43-42 lead.

McCoy responded with a layup of her own as Miami regained a 44-43 lead with 43 seconds left in the quarter.

Toledo closed out the third quarter with a 3-point play by Tanaya Beacham with 25 seconds left that gave the Rockets a 46-44 lead heading into the fourth.

Santucci opened the fourth quarter with a 3-point play and then Boyd hit one of two free throws to give Toledo a 50-44 lead, its largest lead of the game. But Miami answered with a McCoy 3-pointer and jumpers by Molly McDonagh and Leah Purvis to take over a 51-50 lead with 4:29 left.

Toledo would regain the lead on a Boyd free throw that gave them a 53-52 edge with 3:23 left.

But the Rockets were then outscored 15-5 over the final three-plus minutes of the game.

Toledo failed to make a 3-pointer in the game, shooting 0-for-8 from beyond the arc and connected on just 8-of-17 foul shots (47.1 percent).

Miami on the other hand was 8-for-19 from 3 and made 11-of-14 from the foul line.

The win was the fifth in a row for Miami and was the first Redhawks win over Toledo since the 2008 MAC tournament.
