With a new attorney at his side, a Swanton Township man charged in the shooting death of his estranged wife’s boyfriend entered pleas of not guilty by reason of insanity and not guilty Thursday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

David Zielinski, 34, of 3859 Berkey Southern Rd. is charged with aggravated murder, aggravated burglary, kidnapping, and attempted murder in the July 14 death of Michael Jackson, 20, of Toledo. Judge Ruth Ann Franks referred Mr. Zielinski to the Court Diagnostic and Treatment Center for a competency test.

He had been scheduled to go to trial earlier this month when he told the court he wanted to represent himself. He ultimately agreed to have the court appoint a new attorney, and his trial now is set for March 3.
