A Toledo motorist who crashed head-on into another vehicle, killing the driver and hurting two passengers, faces up to 18 years in prison when he is sentenced April 29.

Alberto Selvera, 26, of 1157 Western Ave., pleaded no contest before Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Myron Duhart last week to one count of aggravated vehicular homicide and two counts of vehicular assault.

Prosecutors said he was traveling east on Western at high speed April 21 when he struck the left rear of a car driven by Laquita Hackett of Toledo, who was waiting to turn left onto Marion Street. His sport utility vehicle then slammed head on into a westbound SUV driven by James Steele, 57, of Toledo. He was killed.

Two passengers in Mr. Steele’s vehicle — his wife, Lillian Steele, 55, and grandson, Austin Steele, 16, of Haskins, Ohio — were hurt. Selvera, driving with a suspended license, fled the scene.
