21-year-old indicted over shooting death

A Toledo man who was allegedly bribed not to testify in the murder trial of Quincy Allen was indicted Tuesday for his role in the death of La’Quan Dunbar.

Marlon Powell, 21, of 1618 Freeman St. was indicted for involuntary manslaughter, aggravated riot, participating in a criminal gang, and bribery stemming from the April 19 death of Mr. Dunbar, 20, who was shot in the back of the head during a fight at the Gas & Express Mart, 2315 N. Detroit Ave.

Allen, 22, of 1343 Oak Hill Ct. was convicted of murder with firearm and gang specifications and participating in a criminal gang in a jury trial in Lucas County Common Pleas Court earlier this month.

Surveillance video from the gas station showed Mr. Powell assaulting an individual, then confronting Mr. Dunbar, although the actual shooting occurred off camera.

In a recorded interview with police, Mr. Powell told investigators he heard the shot and turned to see Allen standing over Mr. Dunbar with a gun.

Prosecutors were unable to locate Mr. Powell for the trial. After testimony that Mr. Powell was allegedly offered $5,000 not to testify against Allen, Judge Gene Zmuda allowed the recording of his interview to be played for the jury.
