A Toledo man was sentenced today to 21 years in prison for breaking into an East Toledo home and shooting one of the occupants during a struggle.

Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Myron Duhart imposed the sentence on Xzavier Matthews, 22, of 711 Pearl St.

Following a bench trial in April, Judge Duhart found Matthews guilty of aggravated burglary, felonious assault, aggravated robbery, and grand theft of a motor vehicle for an Aug. 28, 2011 home invasion at the Colorado Street home of Frank and Jackie Gascal and of burglary for an Aug. 8, 2011, break-in at the 115th Street home of Douglas Ducat.

In a brief statement to the court, Matthew reiterated his innocence.

“I feel like I’m being robbed of my life,” he said. “I don’t understand how an innocent man can get convicted for such serious things that I had nothing to do with.”

The judge ordered that Matthews serve the 21-year sentence after he serves 11 years for an aggravated burglary and aggravated arson conviction from Wood County.
