Electrician worked on Davis-Besse, bridge lights

ERIE, Mich. - Kenneth Michalski, 65, a retired electrician with the Local 8 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union, died yesterday in Toledo Hospital from complications of a massive heart attack.

Mr. Michalski, who retired in 2000, started working as an electrician with Local 8 in 1964. During that time, he worked under several contracts and at a number of companies in Toledo and northwest Ohio, said his daughter, Erin Schrantz.

She said he worked on projects ranging from construction of the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station to the lighting of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Bridge, and the construction of the DaimlerChrysler Toledo Machining Plant in Perrysburg Township.

"He was a friend to many people and was always laughing," his daughter said.

Born in Toledo, Mr. Michalski grew up in Toledo and attended public schools. He graduated from Whitmer High School and then enlisted in the Navy, serving from 1960 to 1964.

"He enjoyed fishing and spent much of his retirement doing the things he loved to do, like collecting coins," his daughter said.

Surviving are his ex-wife and longtime friend, Joyce Michalski; daughter, Erin Schrantz; sister, Shirley Perna, and brother, Dennis Michaels.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Sujkowski Funeral Home, Northpointe, where visitation will be after 2 p.m. tomorrow.

The family suggests tributes to the Ohio Valley Affiliate of the American Heart Association or the Lucas County Unit of the American Cancer Society.
