Donald Carl Dugan [1925-2014]; Army vet became a pharmacist

Donald Carl Dugan, a retired pharmacist and an Army veteran of World War II, died Saturday in Otterbein Portage Valley retirement community near Pemberville. He was 89.

His daughter, Patricia Starrett, said he died of complications from congestive heart failure. A former Oregon resident, he moved into the retirement community in September, 2011.

He was born March 27, 1925, to James and Iva Ruth Dugan in Canton and moved to Toledo with his mother after his parents divorced, his daughter said.

He graduated in 1943 from Scott High School. Mrs. Starrett said he went into the Army before he could receive his diploma at the graduation ceremony with his classmates.

In the Army, he trained to be a dental technician, but instead was sent to Europe, where he fought with the 71st Infantry Division’s 5th Infantry as it went through southern Germany.

After the war, he enrolled in pharmacy college at the University of Toledo.

His family said he worked at local drug stores and pharmacies in the Toledo area, including Ondros Drug Store in North Toledo, Walbridge Pharmacy in Walbridge, and Pills and Packages in Elmore.

He retired about 15 years ago.

A golfer, he enjoyed playing at local courses and had traveled to Scotland in the 1980s to play golf on the famous courses there.

He married the former Kathryn Whaley in February, 1951. She died on March 23, 1981.

Surviving are his daughters, Patricia Starrett, Lori Kamilaris, and Sue Hugueley, and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today in the Hoeflinger-Bolander Funeral Home, 3500 Navarre Ave., Oregon.

The family suggests tributes to Friends of Pearson Park, Toledo Humane Society, or Otterbein Portage Valley.
