Nov. bankruptcy filings fall 4% from year ago

November bankruptcy filings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Toledo decreased by 4 percent over the same month a year ago, according to the latest statistics from the court, which covers 21 counties in northwestern Ohio.

Case filings totaled 384 last month, compared to 400 cases filed in November, 2012. Filings were down 5 percent in October.

Through Nov. 30 of this year, 4,935 bankruptcy cases were filed in Toledo, a decrease of 8 percent from the same period in 2012.

For the year, Chapter 7 liquidation cases totaled 4,499 through November, a decline of 7 percent over the same period a year ago. Chapter 13 repayment cases totaled 420, a decrease of 17 percent from the first 11 months of 2012.

Bankruptcy filings are averaging 449 cases per month in 2013, meaning that the year is on pace to end with 5,384 cases. Were that to occur, it would mark the fewest number of personal bankruptcy cases filed in the Toledo court since 2006.
