Manpower: Local hiring to be strong in 3rd quarter
22% of employers say they’ll increase staff
6/11/2014Toledo-area residents who are looking for work can take some comfort in the latest Manpower Employment Outlook Survey.
Manpower Inc.’s survey of employers showed that hiring is expected to be strong in the Toledo area in the third quarter of 2014.
The staffing company said 22 percent of employers expect to boost staff levels in the July-September quarter, while only 3 percent expect to reduce staffing levels. Manpower subtracts the latter from the former to arrive at its “net employment outlook” of 19 percent.
That compares with a 16 percent net employment outlook in the second quarter, and 18 percent in the third quarter last year.
Manpower said job prospects appear best in construction, manufacturing, transportation and utilities, wholesale and retail trade, information, professional and business services, education and health services, leisure and hospitality, and government.
The unemployment rate in Toledo in April was 6.2 percent, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The rate in Lucas County was 5.7 percent. Both of those numbers were more than 2 percentage points lower than the corresponding numbers in April, 2013. And they were the lowest April figures since 2001.
The unemployment rates in the rest of the counties that make up the Toledo metro area also were much lower than a year earlier: Fulton (5.7 percent), Ottawa (7.4 percent), and Wood (4.9 percent).
May’s unemployment rates are to be released June 24.
The unemployment rates only count people who are actively looking for a job, so people who have given up the search are not included.
For all of Ohio, the net employment outlook for the third quarter is 16 percent, down one percentage point from the third quarter last year, but up from 12 percent in the current quarter.
