Teacher of the month: Matt Kizaur

The words ground-breaking, life-changing, and student-driven are often used to describe Matthew Kizaur's approach to teaching. His energy and enthusiasm is apparent when he walks into the room. He always has a positive attitude and sports a signature smile. Ultimately, he is a passionate professional who builds an everlasting rapport with his students. Similarly, he is highly respected and appreciated by the staff at Whitmer High School. Matt truly exemplifies what it means to be a team player; he never hesitates to assist with projects, initiatives, and/or school committees. He has made it apparent that he is committed to learning and growing as a professional. Ultimately, Matt's talents supersede all expectations.

Matt is the recipient of the 2013 Lucas County Inspirational Teacher Award, 2013 Washington Local Schools Achievement Award, and 2007 TAWLS Educator of the Year Award. He received an award/scholarship for over 1200 hours of volunteer service in public interest law from Equal Justice Works and UT Law School for his work with Advocates for Basic Legal Equality. Matt studied abroad in Britain on a scholarship, has acted at the Toledo Repertoire Theatre, and was a professional actor in Chicago. He is certified in Trauma Counseling for children and adolescents, is the Public School Faculty Administrator for the Law and Leadership Program at the University of Toledo, serves as the Whitmer German Exchange Program Facilitator, and has written and directed "The Conductor."

"He is well rounded and connects with students and staff, always adding a positive spin on any situation. He has a huge heart and is committed to making the school and community a positive and safe place for kids."

Matt holds a Bachelor of Arts and dual Masters of English Literature and Education from the University of Wisconsin and the University of Toledo.
