Several area preschools were among 144 statewide to get state grants from a $10 million program to boost early childhood education.

The funds will provide more slots for students at those programs, rated high-quality by the state. In Toledo, Little Generation Day Care, with locations on Bancroft Street and Eleanor Avenue, was awarded $392,000, one of the largest grants in Ohio. The funds will pay for nearly 100 slots at the two sites. Apple Tree Nursery School on Dorr Street was awarded $60,000 for 15 slots; Little Miss and Mister on Harvest Lane, $52,000 for 13 slots, and Education Service Center of Lake Erie West, based on Collingwood Boulevard, $40,000 for 10 slots.

In Wood County, Wood County Educational Service Center received $20,000 for five slots in North Baltimore. In Fulton County, the Fayette district received $20,000 for five slots.
