Venue: Johnson's Island Civil War Prison Site
Address: 3510 Confederate Drive

Johnson’s Island, Ohio – As our nation commemorates the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War, volunteers across the country will once again answer their nation’s call to service. On Saturday, April 5, 2014, history buffs, community leaders and preservationists will team up with the Civil War Trust, History™ and Take Pride in America at more than 98 historic sites across the country to participate in the 18th annual Park Day.

Since its inception in 1996, Park Day has attracted volunteers of all ages and abilities bound by their dedication to serving their communities. In 2013, nearly 8,000 volunteers at 105 historic sites across the country donated more than 36,000 service hours. This year, organizers hope to build on these impressive figures.

The Johnson’s Island Civil War Military Prison site will again participate in Park Day. This is the ninth consecutive year volunteers have helped improve the appearance of this Civil War prison site. Needs range from trail development to general tree litter pickup. A delicious, homemade lunch will be provided, free of charge, thanks to the Friends.

There will be the added bonus of a special presentation to the Friends and Descendants of Johnson’s Island. The 2014 Ohio Civil War 150 Heritage Award will be presented to the Friends for “Preserving and Interpreting Johnson’s Island Civil War Prison Camp.” It will be awarded to the Friends in appreciation for raising funds to purchase 17 acres of the Civil War Prison site, supporting archaeological activities and reintroducing the prison into public memory. The Ohio Civil War 150 Advisory Committee created the Civil War 150 Heritage Awards to recognize the outstanding work being done by people and organizations across Ohio that have had a significant impact on saving and sharing the state’s Civil War history. Be a part of this special event.
