Dinner Tonight: Granola

You can buy granola at the store and pay a fortune for it — considering what you are getting. Or you can expend just a little bit of effort and make it yourself at home. Phoebe Borman prefers to do it herself, and she sent in this recipe that you can individualize any way you like. She recommends using it both as a cereal and a topping for baked goods or even, one imagines, ice cream.

Granola

  • ¼ cup (½ stick) butter or margarine, softened, plus more for baking sheet
  • ½ cup honey
  • 1-2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 3 cups old-fashioned oats
  • Cinnamon
  • Your choice of dried fruit, seeds, and nuts, such as cranberries, walnuts, and sunflower seeds

Preheat oven to 300°. Lightly butter a baking sheet.

Mix softened butter with honey, vanilla, and oats. Spread on prepared baking sheet. Toast in oven for about 10 minutes. Stir the granola, then toast for 5-7 minutes more.

Remove from oven and sprinkle lavishly with cinnamon. Add your choice of dried fruit, seeds, and nuts.
