Chilly weather calls for chili
1/19/2014The Whitehouse Winterfest committee is hosting the second annual Chili Cook-Off Contest open to individuals, restaurants, and organizations.
Each contestant will be required to supply five gallons of chili at the Winterfest to be held Feb. 15. For $1 per vote, individuals can purchase tickets to vote on their favorite chili. The winning entry will receive a cash prize of half the proceeds from the ticket sales. The remaining half will be donated to the Whitehouse Library for programs.
The cook-off will begin at 11 a.m. in a tent near the Whitehouse Library, 10651 Waterville St., and will continue until the chili pots are empty.
Entry forms and rules are available at the Village Hall, on the village Web site at whitehouseoh.gov, on the Whitehouse Winterfest Facebook page, or by calling 419-877-5383. Pre-registration is required so that table space can be reserved for each contestant.
Magazine redesign
The February issue of FOOD & WINE, on newsstands Friday, will debut the magazine’s redesign. The issue also introduces FOOD & WINE’s chefs-in-residence: culinary superstars Grant Achatz, Hugh Acheson, Mario Batali, David Chang, Eric Ripert, and Andrew Zimmern. Along with illustrator-in-residence Anthony Bourdain, the chefs will share their expertise every month on topics ranging from cooking to travel.

Coming soon: more mmmmm chocolate in the melts-in-your-mouth, not-in-your-hands candy. Bags of Mega M&M’s are to hit the store shelves beginning in May.
Based on the online hype, the candies will contain three times the chocolate of the regular M&M’s candy. The super-sized Mega will be available in original and peanut varieties. Supposedly, the peanuts will be mega as well. Several online notices about the candies reveal that the cost is to be $1.49 for a small bag and $3.29 for a medium bag of regular or peanut Mega M&M’s.
