ABOUT THE TEAM:
Coach: Erik Johnson, sixth year
Last season: 5-4, 4-3 Lenawee County Athletic Association
Returning letter winners: 9
Returning starters: Offense 3, defense 6
Schemes: I-formation/4-4
Top players: Seniors Josh Golkiewicz, 5-11, 180, RB-LB; Michael Mannor, 6-2, 260, C; Brennan Kosarue, 5-9, 160, WR-DB. Juniors Jacob Whaley, 6-1, 270, OL-DL; Zach Philipp, 6-3, 195, QB-FS.
Outlook: The Bulldogs have only nine returning letter winners, but seven are seniors.
None is expected to carry a greater load than Golkiewicz, who is looking to rush for more than 1,000 yards for a school-record third consecutive season. He churned out 1,048 yards on 162 carries in seven contests last season, which was shortened by a knee injury. He gained more than 1,500 yards as a sophomore.
Despite a lack of experience, Summerfield is looking to be competitive with consistent play coming from others like Philipp, Mannor, Kosarue, and Whaley.
"We're going to have a lot of new starters, a lot of players playing varsity for the first time," Johnson said. "If we do what we're capable of doing we'll be fine."
