GIRLS SOCCER

FINDLAY — Kassidy Rejent had only scored one goal all season long, but her second tally proved to be a big one Saturday, as it gave fifth-ranked Notre Dame a 1-0 victory over Northview in a Division I girls district soccer final played at Findlay High School.

Rejent, a sophomore center-midfielder for the Eagles (16-1-2), cashed in on her scoring opportunity from the inside the 18-yard box with five and a half minutes remaining in the second half. Her shot from right of center deflected in off a Wildcats player.

Eagles senior goalkeeper Leah Kirk made five saves in her shutout.

“Kassidy’s not one of our main scorers, but she was in the right place at the right time,” third-year Notre Dame coach Chip Smith said. “I think Northview was so focused on stopping some of our other goal scorers, like Dani Johnson, that they might have forgotten her.

“It’s a huge win for the school and the program and the kids. It really means a lot because this is our first district championship.”

The win sends Notre Dame to a regional semifinal against Anthony Wayne 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lake High School. The two teams played to a 2-2 tie in their regular-season meeting.

“When our staff took over three years ago, we laid out some things we wanted to do,” Smith said. “By year three we wanted to win a district title. We also got it last year, but we lost in the district final 1-0 to Anthony Wayne.”

Northview closed its season at 8-7-5.
