Puppy mill issue needs attention

11/30/2013

In response to your Nov. 20 article “Council urged to OK ordinance; Activists seek to stop sales of dogs supplied by puppy mills”: Toledo City Councilman Mike Craig and Ron Johns, who spoke against the ordinance, should visit the puppy retailers in Indiana that supply The Family Puppy store at Franklin Park Mall. The puppies they breed are born of dogs who spend their lives in wire cages, with no love or human contact.

Puppies come into local shelters every day. Why doesn’t John Stottele, who co-owns The Family Puppy, take those puppies and sell them in his store?

Dog stories point to fixable problem

As a volunteer at the Lucas County Dog Warden’s office, I see The Blade’s dog articles as a means of bringing attention to fixable problems.

Rescuing dogs brings positive consequences. Each animal saved means one more person may have a better life when a pet is adopted. Opening one’s heart and home creates unconditional love from an animal that asks for little in return.

Lucas County is better when you publish animal stories.

Brick pavers not such a good idea

The latest Promenade Park work includes the installation of brick pavers (“Park improvements enter 2nd phase; $1.96M to add parking, landscaping,” Oct. 3).

Brick pavers were installed in crosswalks a number of years ago to enhance Toledo’s downtown. Although this was a nice aesthetic improvement, maintenance of these crosswalks has been sorely lacking.

Over the years, as bricks settled, chuckholes developed. City crews patched these areas with blacktop, negating the intent of the improvement.

The new pavers to be installed at Promenade Park likely will develop similar problems. Will the city restore these pavers in the same manner as those in the crosswalks, or budget money to perform proper restoration?

If this is not feasible, the city should stop installing pavers for projects that will turn into eyesores.
