ProMedica ruling a loss for public

5/4/2014

The recent court decision about St. Luke’s Hospital is clearly not a victory for the residents of Lucas County.

Federal Trade Commisson Chairman Edith Ramirez said that because of the ruling, county residents will continue to benefit from competition. Those comments show just how out of touch Washington bureaucrats are.

When I think of the delivery of high-quality health care, the word “competition” never enters my mind. I think of a well-funded and managed, financially sound, well-equipped hospital with a top-level medical staff and a great reputation in the community.

St. Luke’s, as a member of ProMedica, has all of these things. Since 2010, I have seen improvements to St. Luke’s in these categories.

The FTC and appeals court are trying to fix something that is not broken. Let the residents of Lucas County weigh in on this decision. St. Luke’s belongs with ProMedica.
