Restoring liberties to fall to GOP

5/10/2014

The Republican Party is positioning itself to take over the Senate this November because Americans feel ignored and misled by President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and the rest of Democratic lawmakers (“Obamacare a swing issue in election,” op-ed column, April 27).

After six years of meaningless rhetoric, we still have a struggling economy, a $17.5 trillion national debt, continued high unemployment, burgeoning welfare rolls, a flailing health-care law, unsecured boarders, a dangerously submissive and weak foreign policy, and an administration embroiled in major scandals involving the Internal Revenue Service, the National Security Agency, and Benghazi.

I hope it’s not too late for Republicans to reverse the failed, as President Obama called it, fundamental transformation of America, and restore the rights, liberties, and freedoms that our Constitution guarantees.

Health-care law a bait and switch

I’m waiting for the article in The Blade announcing that President Obama and his election campaign team are charged with “bait and switch.”

He made multiple statements about what would occur if the Affordable Care Act was passed. A few of the most important ones were false: that people can keep their insurance if they liked it, and that many people won’t be paying more for coverage than they did previously.

If this multibillion-dollar charade had been conducted by private industry, those responsible would be proceeding through the court system.

Agencies, not city, need to lead transit

Your April 19 editorial “Looking for a leader” is off target. The lack of leadership is coming from the general manager of the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority and the management of the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments.

TARTA has not added a member community since 1974, while losing Perrysburg and Spencer Township. TARTA is in a position to lose Rossford. The TMACOG idea of a regional, no-accountability sales tax has been rejected.

Perrysburg Transit has been a success with support from those who had been critical of the city leaving TARTA and also users of the service.

The Blade needs to address the root cause of the issue, which is the lack of leadership and innovation at TARTA and TMACOG. So far, voting is still a method for people to have the community they want to support.
