Latta’s bill on Internet bad for public

6/21/2014

Your June 5 article on the bill by U.S. Rep. Bob Latta (R., Bowling Green) to block the Federal Communications Commission from regulating the Internet as a telecommunications utility is a sad commentary on capitalism and government (“Latta: Keep Web free of rules; Area rep sponsors bill to limit FCC oversight”).

Folks who want government to get out of the way of business would seem to have no problem with letting large corporations control the Internet and decide which Web sites get moved on the fast track. The big Internet providers would monopolize access and ultimately control what content is made available to users. How are start-up companies, often a source of innovation, to compete in a market such as this? It’s the polar opposite of a free market.

Family left out

of MCO gala

I am disappointed that the families of physicians who were on the consulting committee for the establishment of the Medical College of Ohio were not invited to the recent 50-year celebration (“MCO family reunites during 50th gala,” June 1).

My stepfather, Dr. I. R. Cohn, a longtime Toledo pediatrician, was a member of that committee. I guess MCO’s definition of “family” differs from mine.

Editor’s note: A spokesman for the University of Toledo Medical Center, formerly the Medical College of Ohio, said: “The planning committee for the 50th anniversary celebration worked to include the many individuals involved with the Medical College of Ohio during its history, sending 5,800 printed and 8,800 email invitations. It is unfortunate if anyone was missed during that process.”

Quilting story has local link

I was excited to see the June 15 story “Modern quilters are putting a fresh spin on old tradition,” about the Modern Quilt Guild in Los Angeles. There is an affiliate group here: the Northwest Ohio Modern Quilt Guild, established in 2011.

I thank The Blade for showcasing this art and the quilting movement that began as a result of the group that was started in Los Angeles

Intensive care’s treatment royal

I thank the staff of ProMedica Toledo Hospital’s surgical intensive care unit. I was hospitalized recently for two weeks and received the best of care. I was treated like a king.
