Double dipping is ridiculous

8/18/2014

The Blade has exposed double dipping by some public servants (“Double-dipping may be an issue in levy campaign,” Aug. 10). When these double dippers are confronted about the practice, their usual response is: “I am taking the benefits due to me.”

Being paid for unused vacation and sick days is ridiculous. These benefits might be welcome in the private sector, but public officials should not be able to negotiate such perks.

Also, if you work in the public sector, and retire with a $70,000 annual pension, then you should step aside and let somebody else do the job. Pursue other interests, and do right by the taxpayers who have employed you.

Wood County needs water plant
I wonder whether the residents of Perrysburg, Perrysburg Township, and other Wood County communities enjoy being held hostage by Toledo’s water system. It is time to develop our own water-treatment plant.

Yes, it will cost money, but it will help us in the long run. Toledo will just keep charging us more for water every time something goes wrong with its treatment plant — and we know it will.

Why not vacuum algae bloom up?
Shouldn’t there be some technology available that is similar to what was used during cleanup of the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill?

Is there no way to contain the algae blooms and then vacuum them up? It certainly worked in the Gulf.

Elvis photo stirs joyous memories
What a joy to read your Aug. 11 Monday Memories feature about Elvis Presley’s Nov. 22, 1956, visit to Toledo Sports Arena (“Elvis Presley shakes up Toledo).

I was a poor girl from the east side; paying $2 for a ticket to see Elvis was out of the question. But my mother’s friend gave me a ticket. I walked to and from the arena alone because none of my friends could afford to go. I was only 15, but times were much safer back then.

I was fortunate enough to see him again in Las Vegas in 1972, and I visited Graceland in 2001. Thank you for rekindling these fond memories.
