James Beard Award Semifinalists from Ohio

Semifinalists for the James Beard Awards' Restaurant and Chef categories were announced last week, and three nominees from Ohio were recognized in the category of Best Chef: Great Lakes - Douglas Katz, Fire Food & Drink, Cleveland; Anne Kearney, Rue Dumaine, Dayton; and Jonathon Sawyer, The Greenhouse Tavern, Cleveland. This is a tremendous honor, as over 38,000 nominations were received for what are commonly called "The Oscars of the Food World."

The James Beard Foundation's stated mission is to "celebrate, nurture, and honor America's diverse culinary heritage through programs that educate and inspire." Beard himself was a cookbook author and teacher who died in 1985; he was a champion of American cuisine and a mentor to many. Established in 1990, the Beard Awards recognize culinary professionals around the United States for excellence and achievement. Other categories, besides the ten for regional chefs, include Outstanding Pastry Chef, Rising Star Chef of the Year, and Best New Restaurant.

The finalists will be announced on March 18, and the awards ceremony will take place in New York City on May 5.

March is National Nutrition Month

National Nutrition Month is an annual campaign promoting education and information about eating in a more healthful manner and focusing attention on food choices. "Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right" is this year's theme, in an effort to combat individuals' choosing taste over nutrition even when knowing about potential health consequences when selecting certain options. For more information about eating right on the run, heart health for men, recipes, and other topics, go to eatright.org.
