The Northwest Ohio Farm to School regional workshop will present information about how to connect schools and local farms for increasing opportunities to serve fresh local produce in school cafeterias. This initiative aims to improve student nutrition, provide educational opportunities, and support local and regional farmers.

It also offers learning opportunities through school gardens, farm tours, farmer in the classroom sessions, chefs in the classroom, culinary education, sessions for parents and community members, and visits to farmers’ markets.

The workshop will be at the Hilton Garden Inn, Levis Commons, Perrysburg, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 29.

Scholarships

The James Beard Foundation is accepting applications for its 2014 scholarship program, with more than $450,000 in scholarships and grants available. Established in 1991, the scholarship program assists those who plan to attend a licensed or accredited culinary school or hospitality institution.

More information and application forms are at sms.scholarshipamerica.org/jamesbeard. Applications must be postmarked by May 15. Winners will be notified in August.

Also from the James Beard Foundation is a chance to get a peek into the kitchen of the James Beard House in New York.

“Anyone with access to the web can get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes for a chef and his or her team to create a multi-course dinner in the same kitchen where James Beard entertained his friends and taught students for more than a quarter of a century,” said Alison Tozzi Liu, director of media for the foundation.

The JBF Kitchen Cam will run during most James Beard House events, including dinners on Friday (Songkran Thai New Year Celebration), April 15 (Second-Night Passover Seder), and April 22 (Made in Memphis.)
