SOUP nurtures charities

The Toledo Lucas County Public Library's main branch on Michigan Street will host the Spring SOUP Social May 20.

One of the area’s most fabulous fund-raisers will be held 4 to 6 p.m. May 20: the Spring SOUP Social hosted by Toledo SOUP. It will be held at the Toledo Lucas County Public Library, 325 N. Michigan St., and offers not just dinner but an opportunity to make a difference in our community.

For just $5 in cash, paid at the door, you’ll get to sample soups prepared by area chefs. Salad and bread round out the meal. Four presentations will be made — 4 minutes each, with four follow-up questions — by representatives from local organizations, each talking about why their groups need funding. Guests then get to vote on their favorite program, and the winner will receive the evening’s proceeds of up to $1,500 to support their projects.

The emcees will be Meaghan Mick and Eric Chase, and music will be provided by Dooley Wilson. There will also be a bake sale offering desserts and a raffle with donations from local businesses.

Roll with Fête d’Été

Starting at 6 p.m. June 12, join in a unique progressive dinner with Anne Amie Vineyards’ winemaker Thomas Houseman, an avid bicyclist who will lead a gastronomic tour on wheels through downtown Toledo.

The Fête d’Été (which translates to Summer Party) is being sponsored by ampelography wine distributors and will include five local establishments: Registry Bistro, Fowl and Fodder, the Heights, Mancy’s Steakhouse, and Nick and Nino’s, which is chef Rob Campbell’s food truck. Diners will bike from one site and one course to the next throughout the evening, with each offering a special Anne Amie pairing.

Bittersweet event

Bittersweet Farms, which offers agricultural, artistic, culinary, social, and residential programs on three campuses for people with autism, is hosting its fourth annual Celebrating Possibilities fund-raiser from 6 to 8 p.m. May 24. This fun event is presented by Dana Inc. and Morgan Stanley and will be held at its Whitehouse location, 12660 Archbold-Whitehouse Rd.

Fowl and Fodder will cater the farm-to-table dinner, and Nick Neenan will provide live music. There will be a silent auction and a raffle. Additionally, Bittersweet Farms’ products — condiments, artwork, cookies, woven items, and vegetables — will all be available for purchase.

Fair competitions

It’s time to start dreaming of blue ribbons at the Ohio State Fair, being held July 25 to Aug. 5 at 717 E. 17th Ave., Columbus.

Multiple categories will let you showcase your specialties, from pies, cakes, candies, and cookies to breads, jams, pickles, and dishes containing eggs, wine, honey, and other local ingredients. There will be live cook-offs, a chili competition, and even a deviled egg challenge. The deadline to enter is June 20.
